Notch (engl. für Kerbe, Aussparung, Scharte) ist eine Aussparung am oberen Display-Rand eines Smartphones; diese Form von Displays wird auf Englisch auch als Notched Display bezeichnet.[1][2] Populär wurde die Notch mit dem iPhone X von Apple, welches im September 2017 als erstes iPhone-Modell mit einem OLED-Display der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurde.[3] In der Notch dieses iPhone-Modells sind neben einer Selfie-Kamera noch mehrere Sensoren untergebracht.[4] Zuvor gab es aber mit dem am 30. Mai 2017 öffentlicht vorgestellten Essential Phone PH-1 von Android-Erfinder Andy Rubin ein Smartphone mit einer Notch, die allerdings wesentlich kleiner war.[5][6]

In der Folge kamen mehrere Android-Smartphones, die ebenfalls eine Notch hatten, auf den Markt[7][8], z.B.:

Trotz der Nachahmung durch mehrere Smartphone-Hersteller ist die Notch kein unumstrittener Trend.[14][15][16][17]

Android enthält ab der Version P spezielle Unterstützung für Displays mit Notch.[18] Google erlaubt den Herstellern höchstens eine Notch pro Display-Rand, die sich auch am unteren Display-Rand befinden darf; es darf aber keine Notch an einer der Display-Seiten geben.[19]

Mit dem Aquos R2 Compact gibt es sogar ein Smartphone, das zwei Notches (jeweils eine am oberen und am unteren Bildschirmrand) hat.[20]
